Frequently Asked Questions About Veins
What is Venefit™ Targeted Endovenous Therapy?
The Venefit™ procedure is a minimally invasive treatment option for patients suffering from chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and/or varicose veins. Venefit™ therapy employs the signature ClosureFast™ catheter to deliver radiofrequency (RF) energy to the diseased vein. This energy evenly heats the collagen in the vein walls, causing them to contract and close. Once the diseased vein has been sealed, the blood will re-route itself to other healthy veins.
Is the Venefit™ procedure covered by health insurance?
Because vein disease can lead to potentially serious health complications, many insurance companies offer partial or full coverage for the Venefit™ procedure. If your insurance provider does not cover the procedure, our office will work with you to create a manageable payment plan that fits into your budget.
Is the Venefit™ procedure painful?
Unlike many other vein disease treatment options, the Venefit™ procedure causes minimal discomfort, and you will be given a local or regional anesthetic to numb the treatment area, ensuring a nearly pain-free treatment.
Does the Venefit™ procedure require anesthesia?
The Venefit™ procedure will be performed on an outpatient basis at Dr. Maldonado’s office—prior to treatment, patients will be given local or regional anesthesia to ensure their comfort during the procedure.
How long will the Venefit™ procedure take to perform?
The Venefit™ procedure is designed to quickly and efficiently treat the diseased vein(s), and can target a vein that is 45 cm in length in only 3-5 minutes, which allows for an overall treatment time of approximately 45-60 minutes (exact treatment times may vary depending upon the extensiveness and severity of the patient’s vein disease).
Is the Venefit™ procedure appropriate for everyone?
The Venefit™ procedure has been shown to be effective for both male and female patients across a wide range of ages. In order to determine if you are a good candidate for the Venefit™ procedure, Dr. Maldonado will perform a thorough medical evaluation and will conduct specific diagnostic tests (i.e. ultrasound vein mapping) in order to create a customized treatment plan designed to expeditiously resolve your vascular problems.
How does the Venefit™ procedure differ from endovenous laser treatment?
Although endovenous laser ablation and the Venefit™ procedure are both minimally invasive vein disease treatment options, the Venefit™ procedure is associated with lower rates of pain and bruising, and has a decreased risk of procedural complications.
How does the Venefit™ procedure differ from vein stripping?
Vein stripping is a more invasive and painful treatment option, and requires two incisions (in the groin and the calf), versus the singular, small incision necessitated by the Venefit™ procedure. During vein stripping, a tool is threaded through the diseased vein in order to pull the diseased vein out of the leg, whereas with the Venefit™ procedure, the vein is treated with radiofrequency energy, sealed shut, and left in place, which reduces the likelihood of pain and bruising.
How does the Venefit™ procedure differ from the VNUS Closure procedure?
The Venefit™ procedure is simply a new name for the VNUS Closure procedure, and provides the same clinically proven results and successful patient recovery profile.
How quickly after my Venefit™ treatment can I return to normal activities?
One of the key advantages of the Venefit™ procedure is that it allows patients to resume normal activities more quickly than patients who have undergone surgical vein stripping or endovenous laser ablation. Following Venefit™ treatment, most patients are able to resume regular movement, with no interruption to their daily activities. Patients will be asked to avoid very strenuous activities (i.e. heavy lifting) or prolonged periods of standing for 2-3 weeks, and to begin a regular walking regimen in order to facilitate proper healing.
Will there be any visible bruising, scarring, or swelling after the Venefit™ procedure?
Most patients report minimal (if any) swelling, bruising or scarring after their Venefit™ treatment.
When will I notice improvements in my vein disease symptoms?
In general, patients report a noticeable improvement in their vein disease symptoms within 1-2 weeks after the Venefit™ procedure.
